One granny’s invite mixup has sparked a new holiday tradition.
Last year Wanda Dench accidentally texted 17-year-old Jamal Hinton an invite meant for her grandson inviting him over for Thanksgiving dinner at her Mesa, Arizona home. After realizing the mistake, Hinton asked if he could still have a dinner plate to which Dench replied, “Of course you can. That’s what grandmas do… Feed everyone.”
A year later, Dench extended the invitation and Hinton came once again —this time, with his girlfriend and pumpkin pie in tow. The two now talk once a week and Hinton is happy to have Dench as an adopted grandmother.
“He always has an open invite to our house for Thanksgiving,” Dench said. “I do believe there are no accidents in life.”
Thanks to Dench’s grandson’s sudden change of phone number, an unlikely pair was able to build a friendship.
